Richard J. Chavez died Saturday in Grand Junction, after a battle with cancer. He was 56.

Chavez was born in Gilman and raised in Red Cliff. A lifelong resident of the Vail Valley, he graduated from Battle Mountain High School in 1965 and worked at Eagle River Water and Sanitation District until retirement. During his time in the valley, he participated with the Holy Cross 4-Wheelers, Powder Hounds Snowmobile Club, and was a member of the Eagle County School Board, various water boards and his parish council.

Chavez had been in Grand Junction with his wife, Frieda, and working part-time at West Water Engineering for the past three years. He spent much of his time with his family and friends and also boating at Lake Powell. Friends said he was always quick to lend a helpin ghand no matter what the task. They said generosity was important to him, whether it was help with a project, lending a laugh of insight-- or something more precious. Chavez donated a kidney to prolong a relative's life.

Chavez is survived by his wife, Frieda; sons Darrell and Daniel; daughters Bernadette and Angela (Mike); his granddaughters, Jalyn, Jayme, and Joy; his mother, Amalia; his brothers: Lawrence and his wife, Linda, and family of Denver; Ernest and wife Hazel and family of Minturn; his sisters: Beverly and husband John, and Arlene and husband, Anthony, all of Edwards; Janice and husband, Walter, and family of Red Cliff; Alice and husband, Gary, and family of Pueblo, and Rosella and husband, Joe, and family of Pueblo.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., today at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Grand Junction. Cremation will follow.
