Former Oak Creek resident Bessie Borroel died at the home of her niece April 19, 2007, in Grand Junction. She was 83.
She was born Dec. 25, 1923, in Sheridan, Wyo., to Ventura and Josephine (Esparza) Borroel. She spent her childhood and much of her life in Oak Creek.
She also lived in Craig, Eagle and Grand Junction, as she was cared for by various members of her family.
Bessie loved music and coloring books. She enjoyed watching Shirley Temple and John Wayne movies and watching her nephews play baseball. Bessie was known for her contagious smile and her laughter.
Bessie was active with Horizons for the Handicapped in Craig and The MDS Group in Grand Junction.
She is survived by her sisters, Esther Martinez of Oceanside, Calif., Alberta and her husband, Bill Early, of Manteca, Calif., Pearl and her husband, Sal Mercado, of Leadville, and Eleanor and her husband, Norval Loftus, of Tucson, Ariz.; brothers, Daniel Borroel of Oak Creek, Adolph and his wife, Sadie Borroel, of Oak Creek, Manuel Borroel of Oak Creek, and Salvador and his wife, Sarah Borroel, of Arvada; sister-in-law, Lucy Borroel of Gypsum; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Oak Creek on April 23, 2007, with Fr. Ernest Bayer officiating. Michele Hess was the soloist and sang "Amazing Grace." Pallbearers were Steve, David and Sal Mercado, David Borroel, Kane and Wesley Schneider. Interment followed in the Oak Creek Cemetery. A rosary was recited prior to the Mass.
