Hotchkiss resident and former Eagle resident Woodrow E. Brown, M.D., passed away on Saturday, Jan. 28 at the Horizons Care Center in Eckert, Colo. He was 87 years old.

He was born in Glenwood Springs, Colo., on April 28, 1918, to George Howard and pearl Alvena (Personett) Brown. He spent almost all of his childhood and youth in Eagle, Colo,. graduating from Eagle High School in May or 1935. He graduated from Grand Junction Junior College in 1937.

Unable to continue college he spent the winter of 1937-38 as a 'lettuce tramp' in Arizona and California. He entered Colorado University in the fall of 1938, and graduated with a B.A. degree in June of 1940. He was accepted into the Colorado University School of Medicine that fall. It was war time and he was one of the first to be drafted that year, but was deferred to continue his studies.

He and Marguerite Brooks of Eagle were married June 21, 1942. She was a school teacher and worked at Remington Arms as he pursued his studies.

He entered the US Navy as a medical officer in September and went to Camp Parks, Calif., where he joined the 20th and later the 7th Naval Construction Battalions and into the Pacific Theater, where he also served. He went to Pearl Harbor, then to Saipan, and made the beachhead at Okinawa just after Easter. He was there when the war with Japan ended. On his return to the States, he was at Treasure Island Naval Hospital in charge of a minor surgery ward until his discharge. He was considering the Navy as a career, until he was offered the first General Practice Residency at Colorado University. He accepted that and spent two valuable years there preparing himself for his life's work.

In 1948, he and a college classmate started the North Fork Medical Clinic in Paonia. He practiced there for 32 years. He was a charter member of the Academy of General Practice.
