Longtime Minturn resident Shirley Jean Archuleta died of heart complications on Feb. 10. She was 61.

Archuleta was born Dec. 16, 1943, in Petaca, N.M. She later moved to Colorado and met Jake Archuleta, also of New Mexico. Shirley and Jake were later married in Alamosa and soon moved to Minturn, where they spent the next 36 years. They had six children, all of whom grew up in Minturn.

In July 1998, she and most of her family moved to a ranch just outside of Salida. She enjoyed spending time in the mountains, going to bingo, dancing, listening to Spanish music and also going to Central City, friends and family members say.

She also attended Friday night services at Upper Room Church of God. Her pride and joy was her Cadillac, friends and family members say.

She was a collector of Indian dolls and items. An Indian doll, a gift from her husband, was the prize of her collection. She named the doll Jauqin, and all visitors to Shirley's home were allowed to hold it, friends and family members say.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 43 years, Jake Archuleta of Salida; her father, Phil Pena of Salida; son Philbert Archuleta (Josie) of Buena Vista; daughter, Peggy Membrena (Erasmo) of Avon; son Jake Archuleta III (Tina) of Salida, Steve Archuleta (Autumn) of Gilette, Wyo., and Eric Archuleta (Francine) of Salida; one sister, Edna Baca of Minturn; 19 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, several nieces, aunts, nephews, uncles, cousins and many friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Felicita Pena, and son Randy Archuleta.

A rosary was held Monday at the Lewis and Glen Mortuary in Salida. Interment was Tuesday in Salida.
