Funeral services for Mrs. Jennie A. Carter were held Friday, Feb. 17 at the First Baptist Church of Garfield County in Silt. The Rev. Bill Bright and Adair Rippy officiated. Burial was in the Silt Odd Fellow Cemetery. The Sowder Funeral Home of Rifle was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Carter was born Jennie Adela Rippy on May 7, 1897 in Gentryville, Mo., the daughter of William Mosby and Lennie Agnes Crawford Rippy. Mrs. Carter lived in Missouri, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and Arkansas during her childhood. Her family moved to Colorado, making the trip by covered wagon from OK to Walsenburn in July of 1914. In 1915 the moved to Silt, father and sons making the journey by immigrant railroad car taking their livestock, furniture, and family personal affects as far as New Castle. Mrs. Rippy and two daughters came by train. They lived in tents on the south side of the Grand River now know as the Colorado River, until they could build a home. Mrs. Carter was united in marriage with Robert Frank Carter on April 16, 1917 in Silt. Mr. and Mrs. Carter lived in the Silt community where Mr. Carter did custom threshing and worked in the saw mills for many years. Mrs. Carter was known for the tender loving care she gave to many folks who could not care for themselves. She cared for them in her own home. Mrs. Carter continued to make her home in Silt until poor health, when she moved to Edwards where she lived with her daughter and son-in-law. Mrs. Carter passed away at Edwards on Feb. 14. Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Arthur (Marilyn) Stephenson of Edwards; two sons, Edward of Silt and Dale of Castle Rock;a brother, E.J. Rippy of New Castle; a sister, Mrs. Harry (Imogene) Cook of Rifle; 14 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and other relatives and many friends.
