Charles "Chick" P. Casteel of Grand Junction died Thursday in St. Mary's Hospital. He was 71. Mr. Casteel was semi-retired. He had lived in Glenwood Springs for nearly 60 years where he was a painting contractor, businessman and founder of Chasco Manufacturing Co. Inc. He also served as a congressional aide to Jim Johnson until 1980. He had moved to Grand Junction in 1981. He was born August 15, 1918 to Richard L. Antoinette Benesch Casteel In Colorado Springs. He spent his childhood and attended school in Glenwood Springs. he married Myrtle Wolf on August 20, 1939 in Venango, Neb. She survives. Mr. Casteel was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church and had been a member of the vestry and Bishops' Committee of St. Barnbas Church in Glenwood Springs. He was active in many civic organizations in Glenwood Springs and had serve don the Glenwood Springs City Planning Board. he was an active member of the Republican Party serving as 4th District Chairman for 12 years during the 1960s and 1970s. He was a longtime member and had been commander of the American Legion as well as a member of past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Casteel was a technician fifth grade in the US Army during World War II. Other survivors include a son, Joseph P. of Carbondale; two daughters, Janet Smallwood of Clifton, and JOan Wright of Watertown, N.Y.; a brother, Richard G. of Grand Junction; a sister, Mar. E. Nash of Colorado Springs; nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchilren. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Matthew's Episcopal Church with the Rev. W. R. Foster officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Gardens Cemetery (Grand Junction).
