Longtime Phippsburg and Yampa resident Flora Crowner died Oct. 30, 2006, at the Larchwood Inn in Grand Junction. She was 89.
She was born Feb. 19, 1917, near Lakin, Kan. She was the eldest daughter of Amos and Grace Smith. When she was about two years old, she and her parents moved to Fountain, where her father began his railroading career. When her father became an employee of the Denver and Salt Lake Railroad, the family moved to Fraser, Kremmling, Tabernash and then to Phippsburg. After finishing eighth grade in Phippsburg, Flora attended high school in Oak Creek for three years. She transferred to Yampa Union High School her senior year. Later, she attended Barnes Business School in Denver.
Flora and Earl Crowner were married Nov. 7, 1937, in Phippsburg. To this union, two sons were born, Terry Smith and Gary Earl.
Flora was an accomplished pianist and organist. She touched the lives of many people through her singing, playing and teaching piano to the many people in and around Yampa.
She was quite creative and enjoyed craftwork, writing stories and poems, but dearest to her heart were the worship songs she composed, played and sang.
Flora had a deep spiritual belief and touched people by her profession of faith. At the age of 12, she was baptized in Sloan's Lake in Denver and joined the Baptist Church in Phippsburg. After her marriage and move to Yampa, she became a member of the Yampa Bible Church, for which she was the pianist and organist for many years.
Realizing the need to be in a lower altitude, Flora and Earl moved to Grand Junction, where they enjoyed their new home and milder climate.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband of 68 years.
She is survived by her sons, Terry and his wife, Susi Crowner, of Yampa, and Gary and his wife, Tootie Crowner, of Walden; three grandchildren, Kip and his wife, Margaret Crowner, of Centennial, Angelique and her husband, Greg Dieker, of Parker, and Allen and his wife, Theresa Crowner, of Northglenn; four great-grandchildren, Melissa, Rachel, Scott and Austin Crowner; two nephews, Patrick and Kevin Gneiser; three nieces, Becky Cockerill, Karen Gilroy and Erle Lynne Jones; two sisters, Frances Gneiser of Grand Junction and Georgia Smith of Colorado Springs; and her sister-in-law, Coline Crowner of Grand Junction.
