Keith Waldo Drake passed away
on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at
Family Health West Hospital in
Fruita, Colorado. He was 82 years
of age.
Funeral services will be held at
2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 24,
2010 at the Delta Presbyterian
Church with Mr. Russ Tyler,
minister, officiating. Burial will
follow at Delta City Cemetery, Delta, Colorado.
Keith was born to the late Vern and Florence Fannie (Fifield)
Drake on March 26, 1928 in Kansas City, Missouri.
Keith spent his childhood in Monte Vista, Colorado and the San
Luis Valley graduating from Sargeant High School. He received his
Bachelor's Degree from Colorado State University and his Master's
Degree from Adams State University. Keith married Helen Louise
Campbell on August 28, 1959 in Gunnison, Colorado. She preceded
him in death. Keith was a resident of Delta, Colorado for over 50
years. He was a member of Delta United Methodist Church in Delta,
Colorado.
Keith received a Colorado Lifetime Teaching Certificate in 1951.
His first contract with Delta School District was in 1954 filling in
for a teacher that left the district. In the fall of 1954, Keith became a
full-time teacher and coach for Delta School District. The sports he
focused on were basketball and track. Keith served the Delta County
School District for 34 years as a teacher, a counselor, assistant principal
and principal. He was Principal of Delta Junior High for nine
years and a Title I Director for seven years. Keith finished his career
in 1987 as Assistant Superintendent at the District Office.
Keith always appreciated the opportunity he had in helping young
people prepare themselves to be good adult citizens. He was past
President of the Delta Rotary Club and the Delta Chamber of Commerce
and was also involved in several service organizations. Keith
enjoyed farming and driving.
Keith is survived by his son, Kelly Drake of Grand Junction; two
granddaughters, Stephanie and Jordan Drake, also of Grand Junction,
Colorado; two brothers-in-law, Norman Campbell and David
Campbell, both of Delta, Colorado, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Keith was preceded in death by his parents, Vern and Florence
Drake; his wife, Helen; two sisters and one brother.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 23,
2010 at Mesa View Mortuary Chapel in Delta, Colorado.
The family suggests memorial donations to be made in Keith's
memory to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado, P. O.
Box 24, Delta, Colorado 81416 or to the charity of your choice.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral
Service and Crematory.
