Part-time Routt County resident Elvis Guin of Palisade passed away Aug. 24, 2007, at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction. He was 79.
Elvis was born Feb. 13, 1928, to Ward and Madge Guin in Stroud, Okla. He spent his childhood in Stroud before graduating from Classen High School in Oklahoma City. Elvis then went on to the University of Oklahoma at Norman and received a degree in petroleum engineering. While at the university, he was a member of the EIT Honor Society.
Elvis married Patricia Ruark on Aug. 17, 1950, in Oklahoma City. She preceded him in death on Feb. 8, 2002, in Grand Junction. Elvis worked for various petroleum companies throughout his career, including National Tank and Iranian Oil Co. During his life, Elvis lived in Denver, Awhiz, Iran and Houston, Texas, before moving to Palisade, where he lived for the past 17 years.
Elvis was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, camping and skiing.
He was a member of the Colorado Ski Patrol and a Colorado Mountain College backpacking guide.
Elvis was a member of the Palisade Lions Club, Trout Unlimited, Partners and the Mesa Land Trust. He volunteered at the Palisade Middle School and was an active participant in keeping the Palisade Public Library open.
While backpacking in Wyoming, Elvis discovered a significant Indian artifact that is now on display at the Pinedale Museum in Pinedale, Wyo.
His son, Salem Guin of Palisade, survives.
