Steven R. Ivers, a long-time Craig resident, died Sunday, May 11, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction following a 23-month courageous battle against lung cancer. He was 37 years old.
Steve was born Sept. 6, 1970, in Belle Fourche, S.D., to Gary C. and Faye E. (Smith) Ivers. The family later moved to Craig, where Steve attended school. He graduated from Moffat County High School in 1988.
Steve married Holly Ann Frericks on Aug. 11, 1991 in Craig. A daughter and son were born to this union. Steve worked at Loudy-Simpson Park as a groundskeeper and took pride in maintaining the ball fields. For the past 10 years, he worked at Twentymile Coal Company; his last position was as a skills trainer.
Steve was an avid sports fan, not only participating in hockey, bowling and golf, but was well known for his work with community youth. He coached baseball, football, basketball, hockey and soccer. He also served on many governing boards for these organizations and served as president of the softball league and vice president of the youth hockey league. He also enjoyed working in his yard and being with his family.
Steve is survived by his wife, Holly Ann Ivers, of Craig; daughter, Britteny Ivers, of Craig; son, Brentten "Bubba" Ivers, of Craig; mother, Faye Nissen, of Craig; father, Gary (Nancy) Ivers, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; sister, Bobbie Jo (Brian) Bogan; nephews, James and Ben Bogan, of Steamboat Springs, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
A funeral was Friday, May 16 at Loudy-Simpson Park with J.B. Chapman officiating. Music selections were "I Can Only Imagine," by Mercy Me, "If You Go Before I do," by George Younce, and "Take Me Out to the Ballgame." Kevin Wilbanks and Tammy Seela presented a dedication of Field No. 4.
Pallbearers were Bo Camp, Josh Lemon, Rich Nichols, Kevin Wilbanks, Rich Steinhaus and Buddy Grinstead. Honorary pallbearers were James Bogan, Benjamin Bogan, Cody Frericks, Brogan Frericks, Zachary Churchwell and Braxton Churchwell. Interment followed in the Craig Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Steve Ivers Memorial Fund in care of Moffat County National Bank, 435 Mack Lane in Craig.
