WAYNE T. JONES DIED SATURDAY

Eagle county lost a loyal citizen and prominent businessman last Saturday, with the sudden death of Wayne T Jones in a Glenwood hospital. Mr. Jones had been ill for the past several weeks, and Friday was taken to Glenwood Springs where he was undergoing examinations when a heart attack ended his life Saturday afternoon at the age of 60. Son of Adele Townson Jones and James Mills Jones, one time mayor of Kansas City, Wayne Jones came to Eagle nearly 30 years ago, and was associated in ranching with his step father, Clyde F. Lloyd. From the beginning of his residence in Eagie county, Mr Jones and his wife, took an acttve part, and more than often, the lead in every phase of small-community activitiesMany phases of the community’s progress in the past thirty years were results of Mr. Jones’ planning and fruit of his labor- He served for sixteen years as county commissioner, and took a lead in the county organization of the Republican party. He served as secretary on the school board of District 4, and headed many committees for the development of the town and county, as well as serving on many war-bom committees. To say that Mr Jones served on these committees are but words, for Mr- Jones actually was the committee or board on which he served, forging ahead when plans bogged down, to complete the aim of his particular organization. He retired from politics last year, when he turned down the request to run on re-nomination for county commissioner. With Mrs Jones he has owned and managed the Diamond J Ear Services, a business established on their Diamond J Bar Ranch, which has during the years been the scene of many brilliant 40 and 8 and American Legion gatherings. An outstanding stockmen, Mr. Jones was associated in purebred Hereford cattle raising with the late Clyde Lloyd and annually held one of the large Hereford sales of the state, in Grand Junction, drawing buyers from ah western areas. A keen interest in sports, led Mr. Jones to bringing in boxing talent, and baseball players, who worked for Mr. Jones on his ranch, in order to be here through the season Mr. Jones was a member of the State Boxing Commission, and also belong ed to American Legion Post 150, at Gypsum.
Words cannot express the loss the county will experience in losing this progressive citizen, who for nearly thirty years was a vital leader of Eagle County- He is survived by his wife, Ruth; a daughter, Adele Simpson; his son-in-law, Howard Simpson and two granddaughters, Ruayne and Ruth Adele. Services were held in the Jones home Monday afternoon by Rev. Paul A. Shields, and Mrs. Alma Harris of Glenwood Springs was the vocalist A Legion graveside service was held in the Eagle Cemetery and pall bearers were Legionnaires William H. Luby, Les Randall, Tom McBreen, Herman Stein, J. D. Allen, Leo F. Fessenden, Marion Ayres, and J J Huntley
