Bernard Kuskie, of Grand Junction, died Aug. 19, 2008, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was 90.
Bernard was born March 2, 1918, in Central City, Neb., to John Adam and Mary Helget Kuskie. He spent his childhood in Nebraska and Dacona and Oak Creek.
Bernard served in the U.S. Army in the European theater in World War II from January 1942 to November 1945. He received the WWII Victory Medal, Distinguished Unit Citation and European-African and Middle Eastern Service Medal.
On Aug. 30, 1945, he married Irene Welsh Kuskie in Edinburgh, Scotland. She died in October 1989.
Survivors include his two daughters, Sheila Kuskie-Larson, of Denton, Texas, and Maureen Borroel-Gagnon, of Grand Junction; a sister, Mary Louise Lombardi, of Oak Creek; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. His parents, one brother, two sisters and his wife preceded him in death.
Bernard was a member of VFW 3311, Egeria Lodge A.F. & A.M. 167, Scottish Rite in Denver, Order of Eastern Star 99 in Hayden and the Oak Creek Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed fishing, trap shooting, snowmobiling, photography and softball. His fishing "crew" always bet on first fish, biggest fish and most fish caught, during their nighttime excursions. Bernard always helped his neighbors and community without a second thought. He had a heart of gold.
A graveside service was held Friday at the Oak Creek Cemetery, with Pastor Kelly Carlson officiating. Graveside rites were by the VFW and Masonic Lodge.
Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan Edfast Mortuary.
