A memorial service will be held Saturday for former valley resident Zacharias Mascarenas, who died in Grand Junction on Monday. He was 94.

Mascarenas was born to Samuel and Pacifica Mascarenas on April 19, 1912, in Alamosa.

In 1954, he and his wife, Rachel, and their family moved to Minturn from Wyoming. Mascarenas went to work in the Empire Zinc Mine at Gilman, and worked there for 20 years. From 1974 to 1985, he worked as caretaker of the Minturn cemetery.

Zacharias and Rachel moved to Fruita in Nov. 1985. Mascarenas was as a foster grandparent from 1988 to 2001, helping to take care of a boy named Travis.

He loved gardening, but main love was going door to door in his ministry work, family members said.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Rachel.

He is survived by his children, Evelyn Gallegos, George Mascarenas and daughter-in law Francie, LaVerne Espinoza and son-in-law Issac, and Benjamin Mascarenas; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

The memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 2334 H Road in Grand Junction. An open house and meal will follow at the Whitman Building, 248 South 4th St., Grand Junction.
