ROY MATHEWS.
Funeral services for Roy MATHEWS were held Wednesday, Jan. 9, at the Eagle Baptist Church in Eagle. The Rev. Bruce R. DUNSDON officiated. Burial was in the Cedar Hill Cemetery at Gypsum. The Sowder Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. MATHEWS was born Roy Nathan MATHEWS, the son of Thomas Mathern and Jossie Lee Hatfield MATHEWS, on March 6, 1915, at Stilwell, Okla. He spent his childhood in the Stilwell community and was educated in its area schools. He was united in marriage with Geraldine Clara WHITMIRE on Feb. 26, 1940, at Stilwell. Mr. and Mars. MATHEWS lived in the Stilwell community where they were engaged in farming. In 1945 they moved to Colorado and the Gypsum community. They had lived in Minturn and at Gilman where he worked for many years as a miner for the New Jersey Zinc and Lead Company. They later returned to the Eagle and Gypsum area and were engaged in farming.
In May 1989 they moved to Parachute where they had since made their home.
Mr. MATHEWS was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers. Mr. MATHEWS passed away in Rifle on Jan. 5.
Survivors include his wife Geraldine; three sons and daughters-in-law, Carrol and Carol WHITMIRE of Reno, Nev., Bill MATHEWS of San Diego, Calif., Don and Gilberta MATHEWS of Gypsum; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donnia and Larry MYERS of Aurora and Elaine SATTERFIELD of Gypsum; a sister, Parlee JOHNSON of Haskell, Okla.; two brothers, George MATHEWS of Littleton and Ray MATHEWS of Stilwell, Okla.;15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.
