Lifetime Routt County rancher William Bowie May died April 9, 2007 in Fruita. He was 78.
Bill was born May 20, 1928, in Steamboat Springs. He was raised on the family's S-S cattle and horse ranch until his retirement.
Bill served in the U.S. Army and active reserves from 1952 to 1961. He was active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Colorado Cattleman's Association, Guide and Outfitters Association, Farm Bureau and Steamboat Writer's Group. He recently wrote weekly historical columns for the Fence Post and Steamboat Pilot & Today. He traveled the western states to participate in Cowboy Poetry gatherings where he entertained as a poet, singer and writer. We will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick N. and Anna B. May; and a sister, Dorothy Jarvis.
He is survived by his wife, Cynthia A. May; sisters, Frances Wheeler and Helen Stonebrink; brother, Jack W. May; and children, Stewart S. and wife, Nancy; J. Nathan and wife, Sarah; David B. and wife, Barbra; and Grace May Chew. He leaves behind 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held April 14, 2007, at the Fruita Baptist Church. A memorial service was at 1 p.m. April 28, 2007, at the First Baptist Church in Steamboat Springs.
