PUBLISHER OF THE ENTERPRISE PASSES AWAY APRIL 21, 1972.
Marilla Reynolds McCAIN, publisher of the Eagle Valley Enterprise, answered the final summons of her maker Friday, April 21, 1972 at Valley View Hospital, Glenwood Springs, at the age of 58 after a lifetime devoted to the newspaper field, and its service to her fellow man. With her husband, Howard, she had published the Enterprise since 1949, and had been active in the newspaper business in Eagle County for 52 years.
She had been in ill health for the last two months, but had dismissed her illness as trivial and had only recently reconciled herself to spending some time in the hospital.
Marilla eynolds McCAIN, the daughter of Adrian REYNOLDS Jr. and Rhoda Wall REYNOLDS, was born at Red Cliff, Colorado, April 28,1913. She was educated in the public schools in Eagle. She received her practical training in the newspaper business working for her father from the time she was seven years old. The granddaughter of newspaper pioneers, she could operate any machine in a print shop, and taught herself the operation of a linotype machine.
"Marilla," as everyone in this part of Colorado knew her, has been Eagle County--in every way that she has known, with every means she could muster. Untiringly devoted to its interests, she was the prime mover in the establishment of the Clinic in Eagle, and her efforts to obtain a full-time doctor for Eagle residents were rewarded last year when Dr. JACOBS came to work at the Clinic.
People were important to her, she liked people, and her cheerful smile and sympathetic ear could always be found in front of the Linotype machine just behind the counter at the Enterprise office.
Her affection and sympathy for people were tempered by her keen insight into human nature, and she was well known for her ability to get to the heart of the matter, summing up national and local foibles in paragraphs filled with high humor and biting wit. Her column, "Around Town," reflected her best efforts and she became one of the most widely quoted journalists on the Western Slope.
A woman of firm opinion, she never feared to state and uphold a principle or cause that she believed to be the right one, even when compromise would have been the easier, perhaps more profitable, course.
Her unstinting devotion to Eagle County was seen in many ways. In 1960,she contributed to the History of Eagle County to the Historical Encyclopedia of Colorado. She was an untiring advocate of intelligent land use, and was one of the most outspoken critics of land speculation as the ski industry expanded into Eagle County. She was an unrelenting foe of the Denver Water Board, and all those who would seek to destroy the county that she loved.
Her life spanned two eras in Eagle County's development. She grew to maturity in the early days when the county was known for its mining and ranching, and she lived to see its natural resources become of of Colorado's greatest recreational assets. But despite its popularity as a growing recreational area, Marilla fought to keep its diversity intact.
She was a highly respected member of the Journalistic Profession, and , along with Gene CERVI, Monk TYSON and other prominent Colorado journalists, founded RORAR, a fraternity of the Colorado Press Association.
Mrs. McCAIN is survived by her husband, Howard;a son, Richard, 19 of Eagle; three daughters, Pam MYERS, of Eagle, Pat CERISE of Glenwood Springs, Jere COVALT of Layton, Utah; one brother, Adrian Wall REYNOLDS, publisher of the Green River Star, Green River, Wyo.; three sisters, Winona PETERSON, of Rifle, Pauline BYERS of Arvada, and Billie HARTMAN of Seligman, Ariz.; ten grandchildren, Tammy, Timothy and Jeff MYERS of Eagle, David, Diana, Delton and Duane CERISE, of Glenwood Springs, and Keith, Jan and Ann COVALT of Layton, Utah. Two sisters, Jeanne and Corine REYNOLDS, preceded her in death.

X-RAY PURCHASE IN MEMORY OF MARILLA McCAIN.
The Board of the Eagle Valley Medical Board announced today that the money donated in memory of Marilla McCAIN would be used toward the purchase of an X-ray unit for the Eagle Clinic. The Board of the Clinic has been seeking a suitable unit for some time and have now located one which should be installed and operating by mid-summer.
Mrs. MCAIN was one of the original members of the Eagle Valley Medical Board and was instrumental by her efforts and "the power of the press" in building the Eagle Medical Clinic and procuring a doctor for it. She was constantly on the lookout for ways to improve medical services. An X-ray unit was one of the ongoing projects to which she devoted her time and interests.
