Jesse A. Race, 53 , a ranch hand and owner of a homestead in Burns Hole , Is at death s door in a Glenwood hospital as the result of a gun shot wound , self indicted , last Monday afternoon at the ranch home of Frank Dietrick near Burns . Race had lived in Burns for a number of years , having proved up on n homestead on Poverty Klats in that m ighborbood , and working as a ranch hand on a number of ranches in the neighborhood . This winter he had been staying at the home of Mr . Dietrick . Monday the latter was away from homo for tho day , and during the afternoon Mrs . Dietrick went to a neighbors for a short while , leaving Kaee alone in the home . When t . hc returned shortly after 4 o clock 3 he found Race lying In a room with tho top of his head torn off and a . 210 gauge shot gun lying beside him . He had , apparently , made three attempts before he llnally succeeded in accomplishing his purpose , as three shots hud been fired from the Bmall gun . The shot which toolc effect had entered the forehead ou the right sldo through the eye , and tho whole top of the skull shot away , and one side of the brain torn . Mrs . Dietrick summoned the neighbors and Dr . Conway of Gypsum . The wounded man was still living when the physician arrived , but did not then think life would last but a few minutes . I Tuesday he wna taken to Glenwood j by E . J . Bailey and placed In a hospital , where it is said his death will j occur at any moment , although he still lived Wednesday morning .

Neighbors of Race say that he has shown signs of losing mental facilities for the past year . However, he had made no remarks or acted In a manner to indicate he was contemplating the action taken . He had made careful preparations for his intended death , having cleaned up ¦ and changed Into clean clothing . He left a note directing the disposition of his property , but made no mention of the reason for his act . He 13 survived by brothers and sisters living near Longmont and Denver .
