tanley River Killed in Farm Accident

Stanley River, former Eagle County man was killed Out. 4 In a farm accident near Lomu. Mr. River was crushed beneath a beet harvester, which he was mounting, on a tactor, when it slipped and fell on him. River, employed by Harold Mogensen who ranches north of Eruita where the accident happened, was working alone at the time. Mogensen ihad been helping him, but went into the house for about an hour and returned to find River crushed beneath the machine a short time before noon. Mogensen used another tractor with a lifter to hoist the one-ton harvester off River's body, then summoned help The man apparently died instantly. He had been employed by Mogensen since moving to the Eruita area from this county. Stanley Jay River was born Feb. 8, 190!) in Gypsum, Colorado and spent his childhood there and in the Sweetwater area. He was one of eight children born to Arthur and Grace River. On July 24. 1931 he was married to Mildred James in Steamboat Springs and to this union were bora two boys and two girls: Stanley A., Calvin Wade, Caralee and Marilee. On March 20, 1949 Mrs. River and the infant Marilee were killed in a car accident on Burns Hill. Mr. River, with the help of his parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Calvin James and sisters-in-law, Mrs Marj' Sallee and Mrs. Betty Piercefield raised the three surviving children. Mr. River lived all his life around Gypsum, Burns, Eagle and Edwards until a few years ago, when he moved to Loma. In August, 1955 Mr. River married Mrs. Alice White in Glenwood, adding to his family three stepsons and one step-daughter. Surviving are his wife. Alice of Loma; two sons, Stanley A- and Wade of Eagle; a daughter, Caralee; three stepsons. John and Jim White all of Loma and Tom White in Okinawa with the Marines and a stepdaughter, Mrs Marie Helkey of Grants, _V. Hex.; five brothers: Tom of Florence; Wade and Chester of Colorado Springs; Elwood of Ouray and Charley of Grand Junction; one sister. Mrs. Mary Hildreth of Clearfield, Utah and six grandchildren. Another sister, Artlena Commer, preceded him in death in 1958. Services were held for Mr. River in the Assembly of God Church in Eruita and at the Methodist Church in Eagle. Burial was in Sunset View Cemetery. Eagle beside his first wife, Mildred and their daughter. Marilee. Pallbearers were Oumand Hurt, Orris Albertson. Don Wurtsmlth, Frank Gates of Burns; Ralph Ward of Silt and Paul Hight of Col lb ran.
