Steamboat Today - November 12, 2006

Former Steamboat Springs resident Winston "Win" Wesley Spangler passed away of natural causes Nov. 6, 2006, while raking leaves in his back yard and enjoying the sunshine in Collbran. He was 94.
Win was born June 25, 1912 in Ottawa, Ill., from the union of David and Ethel Mick Spangler. He graduated from high school in Ottawa in 1930, and soon thereafter took a train to Venango, Neb., to work for his uncle. He met his wife, Virginia Leota Ziemer, and married her in Grant, Neb., on May 6, 1939. Shortly thereafter they moved to Steamboat Springs, where Win owned and operated a dairy farm.
In time, he became the manager of the Elk River Grazing Association, and held that position for 23 years until his retirement at 73.
Win and Virginia and all their horses retired to Collbran, moving to be near their oldest son, Gene, and his family. Through the years, Win was an active member of the American Quarter Horse Association, square dancing clubs and the Farmer's Union. He was also an avid supporter of the FFA and 4-H Club. Win was very proud of the numerous belt buckles he won during the years at local team and calf roping events. He took special pleasure in raising children, horses and eyebrows with his dry sense of humor and clever wit.
Win was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Dick, Stanley, and Virgil; a son, Gene in 1991; and his wife of 59 years, Virginia in 1998.
Win is survived by his dear brother, Carol of Ozark, Mont.; nieces and nephews; son, Lynn and his wife, Kathy Spangler and their children Jeanine, Theresa, Kenneth, and David; daughter-in-law Sylvia, and her daughters, Marsha and her husband, Keith, Glenda and her husband, Mike, and Jacquetta "Jake" and her husband, Lance.
Win enjoyed his great-grandchildren, Cole and Jacob Click, Kyle and Blake Encke, Kaitlynn, Joe, Alyssa and Sarah Foss, Logan and Lane Winston Gross of Plateau Valley, and "A.J." Herman of Grand Junction.
Friends are invited to a memorial service and celebration of the lives of Win and Virginia Spangler at 2 p.m., Nov. 18, 2006, in Plateau City near Collbran at the Plateau Valley Assembly of God Church with the Reverend Robert Wilson and Lynn Spangler officiating.
The family has requested that memorial contributions in Win and Virginia's memory be made to the Plateau Valley 4-H Livestock Club at P.O. Box 85, Collbran, CO 81624.
Friends and family are invited to share their thoughts and fond memories with the Spangler family by leaving a tribute message through www.mem.com. Cremation arrangements are under the care and direction of Martin Mortuary.
