Eldora Skiles, who was born in Gypsum and raised her family in Burns, died Sunday in Grand Junction. She was 86.
She was born in Gypsum on Aug. 31, 1920, to Terles A. (Penny) VanHorn and Earl VanHorn. She spent her childhood in Gypsum.
She was married to Joseph Albert Skiles for 50 years. They lived for most of those years in Burns, where they raised their family.
Skiles was a wife, a mother, homemaker, writer, artist, photographer and historian. For 10 years she worked as the postmaster in Burns.
Skiles always preferred being outdoors doing ranch work rather than being stuck in the house with the domestic chores, family members said.
In later years she took great pride in being known as “The Doll Lady” for the one-of-a- dolls she made, family members said.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Ernest, her sister, Dorothy, and her husband, Albert.
She is survived by three daughters, Johnnie (Lynn) Pittman of Grand Junction, Christy (Ed) Godeski of Glenwood Springs, and Lois Crook of Jacksonville, Fla.;, and three sons, Earl (Sandy) Skiles of Burns, Ed (Wendy) Forrester of Orlando, Fla., and Tom (Alice) Woodrum of Fort Collins. She also is survived by 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
Services will be held Thursday at the Eagle Baptist Church, 14600 Highway 6 in Eagle. The viewing is at 10 a.m. and the service at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Grand Junction.
