Mabel Williams, 94, of Basalt passed awy May 9, 2008 at Columbine Manor in Salida.

Mabel was born Dec. 31, 1913 in Hosington, Kan. to Henry Clay and Jeanetta Kittle. The family moved to Glenwood Springs in 1918 where they settled in at Spring Valley, then later moved to Basalt.

She met and married Bob Williams of Meredith, and they raised their children in and around Basalt. Mabel moved to Silt in 1996, and then to Salida in 2002.

Mabel was an avid gardener and plant lover. She spent many hours growing common houseplants as well as exotic plants in her greenhouse. She was a woman of many talents, writing poetry and short stories, mostly for children. She painted and could build anything out of used lumber, including playhouses for her kids and treehouses for her grandchildren. She loved being outside.

She won many ribbons at the fairs for her pickles, jellies and handcrafted p[rojects. She would say, "I can hardly wait for morning so I can start a new project." She loved spring, but May was her favorite month because "all tings are new."

Survivors include children Kendon (Joni) WIlliams of Rowlett, Texas, Terry (Mary Ann) Williams of Buena Vista, Artia (Vess) Quinlan of Mesita, and Jana (Marvin) Aeschliman of Grand Junction; 14 grandchldren, 24 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mabel was preceded in death by her twin, May Oretta; her husband; brothers Jack Ferguson of Carbondale, Art Kittle of Massachusetts, Elden Kittle of Basalt and Glen Kittle of Basalt; sister Elsie Hopkins of Genwood Springs; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Angel of Shavano, P.O. BOx 1168, Salida, CO 81201.
