Early Day Eagle Pastor Dies in Denver

Services for Walter Winston Winne, 79, associate-general agent of the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Co. were held Wednesday in Denver and burial was in that city in Riverside where five generations of the Winne family are buried.

Mr. Winne died Friday after a long illness. The son of Peter Winne, a Colorado pioneer , who came west in 1862, Mr. Winne was born in Denver March 12, 1877.

He entered Denver University when he was 14, riding horseback to school from his home. He was graduated from Pennsylvania Military Academy at the age of 19 in 1896 and later attended Drew Seminary.

He returned to Colorado to become a Methodist missionary at Eagle, serving as a circuit rider among towns in the present Eagle River valley. He helped establish the Eagle Methodist Church, and was the honored guest at the 50th anniversary of the church at a celebration in Eagle in 1947.

From Eagle, Mr. Winne went to Branchville, N.J. with the YMCA. He married Katherine Campion of Leavenworth, Kans. in 1900, and they moved to Leadville where Mr. WInne was with the YMCA. The family moved back to Denver in 1903 and Mr. WInne became the manager of the Golden Eagle department store. Later he became an executive in the business department of The Denver Post.

The former Methodist missionary entered the insurance business with his father in 1908 and about 1910 was associated with the late J. Stanley Edwards in the Aetna Life Insurance Co.

After the death of his father, Mr. Winne and his two daughters were confirmed in the Episcopal Church and he became one of the first licensed lay leaders in that church.

Mr. Winne is survived by two daughters, Mr. Gertrude Palmer of Denver and Mrs. Anna Rinehart of Oakland, Calif.
