Funeral services for Rubie A. Winters of Grand Junction, the former Rubie A. Helms of Eagle, were held at 3 p.m. Friday, March 24, at the Martin Mortuary Chapel in Grand Junction.
Mrs. Winters died of natural causes Tuesday, March 21, at Family Health West Hospital in Fruita. She was 90.
She was a homemaker and at one time had been a short-order cook.
Mrs. Winters was born Aug. 6, 1898 in Clairmont, Texas, to John and Augusta Hardin Snowden. She spent her childhood in Rocky Ford and Cripple Creek and attended school in Cripple Creek.
When she was a young girl, the family moved by covered wagon to Rocky Ford, where her father tried farming for a year. They then moved to Cripple Creek, where he worked in the gold mines.
She married Tom Winters in 1945 in Grand Junction. She was previously married to Harold C. Helms, who died in 1942 in Colorado Springs.
In 1939, she and Mr. Helms moved from Cripple Creek to Eagle. They were active here in farming. After Mr. Helms' death, she worked in cafes as a cook. After her marriage to Mr. Winters, they moved to Grand Junction.
She was a member of the Clifton congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses and enjoyed sewing, quilting and cooking.
Surviving are her husband, Tom Winters; three sons, Harold S. Helms, John R. Helms and Bill Helms, all of Eagle; two daughters, Marylee Hennagir of Lindin, Mich. and Mildred Soderstrom of Tucson, Ariz.; one sister, Boley Snowden of St. Petersburg, Fla.; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Two brothers are deceased.
The Rev. Kenneth McKay officiated at the March 24 funeral services. Burial was in Memorial Gardens at Grand Junction. Martin Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
