Emil Eugene Woods
1925 - 2009

Emil E. Woods of Grand Junction passed away July 29 at the Hospice Care Center. He was 84 years old.

Emil was born on May 1, 1925 to Edward and Helen (Kauffman) Woods in Billings, Montana. He was the second of three children. At an early age his family moved to Greeley, where he attended Greeley public schools. After he graduated high school, he was employed in several odd jobs, everything from working at a cannery in Greeley to being a golf caddy at the local golf course.

He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the start of World War II. After basic training he was deployed to the Marshall Islands. He was awarded the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts for heroic action and wounds received in Saipan and Iwo Jima. He received an honorable discharge and returned to Greeley.

On his return he eventually joined the Colorado Courtesy Patrol and met the love of his life, Roberta. Emil and Roberta Jane Hieber were married on July 9, 1949 in Greeley. They had four children and were married for 54 years before Roberta passed away in 2005.

During his career with the Colorado State Patrol, the Woods family lived in Steamboat Springs, Grand Junction, Trinidad and Eagle. He retired after 35 years and then worked for the Forest Service in Eagle for 10 years.

Emil was a 33 degree Mason and Past Master of Las Animas Lodge #28 AE & AM in Trinidad and Past Worth[y] Patron of Trinidad Chapter #1 O.E.S. and Eagle Chapter #86 O.E.S.

He loved being in the mountains and enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and especially reading. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend and will be missed by many.

Survivors include daughters, Colleen of Grand Junction, Elaine Cheek (Wendell) of Coeur d'Alene Idaho, and son Edward Woods (Linda) of Goodland, Kan. He is also survived by grandson Christopher (Nicole) Woods of Missouri and two great granddaughters, Emily and Kailie.

He was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Helen, brother Norbert, sister Faye, son Kenton, and his beloved wife Roberta.

Interment was at Sunset View Cemetery in Eagle on Aug. 4 with Masonic ceremony and presentation by the U.S. Marine Corps.

A heart felt thanks to Dr. Mike Pramenko for all of his wonderful care and compassion, for Larchwood Inns and the Commons Assisted Living for their excellent care.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Grand Valley and Shriners Hospital.

Arrangements are made under the direction of Marin Mortuary 550 North Ave, Grand Junction.
