PIONEER MINER MEETS DEATH IN MINE ACCIDENT. A Cave-in at Black Iron Crushed James Dodd to Death Last Monday Morning.
James DODD, a pioneer miner of this district, received injuries while working in the Black Iron mine last Monday morning, from which he died a few hours later.
Mr. DODD was with the timber gang in the mine and had only started on the morning shift when the accident occur[r]ed. As he climbed to his work, a block of ground of a ton or more tore loose from the roof and crushed the unfortunate man to the bottom of the tunnel. He was rescued by his companions and medical assistance called. He was brought to his home in Red Cliff, and died a few hours later from internal injuries.
Mr. DODD was a resident of this camp in the early days, but of late years has lived in various mining camps over the country. The mining and prospecting fever ever had a strong hold on him, and he chose to follow that game all his life. He and his wife returned to Red Cliff a few months ago, and he had intended making this his permanent home.
One of his last expressed wishes was that he be buried in the cemetery at Red Cliff that he might lie among his old friends, and this wish was respected. The funeral services were held Friday afternoon from the Presbyterian church. Cripple Creek and Leadville papers please copy.
