William H. YANKEE former owner of the Sedalia mine here which was named after his birthplace in Missouri and the mining man for whom YANKEE hill of the Leadville district was named, died Monday night at his home in Denver following an illness of some duration. Announcement of the veteran mining man's death was contained in a telegram received yesterday morning by C. H. S. Whipple, former chairman of the Democratic county central committee here who was one of his warm friends during YANKEE's residence in Leadville.

Mr. YANKEE was born in Sedalia, Mo., in July, 1840. When he was 19 years old he left his old home country and started for Pike's Peak, arriving in the neighborhood of that famous mountain in 1859. He immediately engaged in mining which he continued to follow until 1861, when in answer to the call for volunteers he returned to Sedalia and enlisted as second lieutenant in the 33rd Missouri volunteer infantry. He served eighteen months in the war, retiring then after receiving two wounds in his right hand and in his right foot which disabled him for further service.

In 1863 he returned to Colorado and resumed mining operations. From then on mining was his chief occupation, tho he engaged for a time in cattle raising in Wyoming and for a brief time in banking. Hi pursued mining in Gilpin, Clear Creek, Hinsdale, Lake, Park and Pitkin counties, meeting with success in virtually all. At various times he was interested in the London and Queen of the Hills mines in Park county, the Chieftain and Sedalia in Lake county, the Express at Aspen, the Golden Fleece in Hinsdale county, and at one time was manager of the Homestake mine in New Mexico.

Mr. YANKEE's first wife, who before their marriage on December 24, 1860, was Miss Sara E. Bourn of Sedalia, died November 16, 1888. Three children were born to them, Elgin S., Mary Ann, who married H. E. Demorest of Denver, and Evalina, who married George B. Anderson of Lewiston, N. C.

Mr. YANKEE married again in Denver on October 21, 1891, his second wife being Mrs. Mary Boyer.

In politics Mr. YANKEE was a Democrat and in religion a Christian Scientist.

After leaving Leadville he erected a palatial residence in the Highlands residence section of Denver, where he had spent much of his time in latter years.
