Steamboat Today - December 12, 2010

Former Steamboat Springs resident Paul “Smitty” Wayne Smith died July 30, 2010, after a long battle with cancer.
Paul was born Sept. 17, 1924, in Flagler to Conrad H. and Nora Olive Smith. He graduated from Steamboat Springs High School in 1942.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and served his country until December 1945, when he was honorably discharged.
Paul went to work with the Coast & Geodetic Survey from 1949 through October 1962. He transferred to the Civil Service in October 1962. He worked at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, where he helped maintain super accuracy on the High Speed Rocket Engine Test Track. He retired in September 1979.
Paul moved to Cedaredge in 1982, where he led an active life hiking and camping. He also volunteered countless hours to community service, delivering meals and performing handyman tasks of all kinds for fellow church members or anyone who needed a hand. Paul was someone you always could count on to be there in times of need.
In 1953, Paul married Patricia Ann Jones in Riverside, Calif. From this union, two children were born, Marvin and Nancy.
He is survived by a son, Marvin C. Smith; a daughter, Nancy L. Warner; step-children Mickey Story, Ken Story and Lynn Sherrod; grandchildren, Roger and Sam Warner, Lynn Woodward, D.J. Woodward and Tyler Woodward; great-grandchildren, Clayton Woodward and Cody-Jo Woodward; and his dearest friend, Betty Wingfield.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Waldo; his children’s mother; and his second wife, Gladys Story Smith.
A memorial service was Aug. 3, 2010, at Grand Mesa Southern Baptist Church in Cedaredge. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Paul’s memory to Hospice Care Services or the American Cancer Society.
