Marlene Marie Hardy was freed
from her struggles with ALS on
July 31, 2010 and has joined her
Savior in heaven.
Marlene was born in Fort Collins,
CO to Emma and Adam
Specht. She grew up with two
younger brothers, Ron and Jim.
She often shared her stories of
growing up on the family farm.
Although she made herding sheep with her brothers or working in
the beet fields sound unpleasant, one could tell she had a deep love
of family and the land she grew up on. She graduated a Lambkin
from Fort Collins High School in 1950. She graduated from Presbyterian
School of Nursing in Denver, CO in 1954. While there she
met her future husband of 56 years, Pat Hardy. They started their
life together in Thornton, CO and had four children, Steve, Dan,
Kevin, and Karen. She worked as a nurse at an obstetrician office
helping new mothers.
Her family moved to Grand Junction in 1973 where her interests
centered on family, friends, gardening and taking care of the wild
birds attracted to her beautiful yard. She became a Master Gardener
and thoroughly enjoyed her active involvement in the Desert Vista
Garden Club. Each summer her family and friends were amazed at
the stunning flowers or remarkable produce she created in her backyard.
She also devoted time volunteering at St. Mary's Hospital, her
church and local schools. She traveled to many places with family
and friends and although she enjoyed seeing new places, it was
spending time with those around her that brought her the most pleasure.
Even when she was struggling with ALS, she still made time
for others, smiled and "brought bunches of love" to everyone.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Emma and Adam
Specht; her brother, Ron Specht; her son, Dan Hardy, and a grandchild,
Myka Marlene.
Marlene is survived by her husband, Pat; her brother, Jim Specht;
her children, Steve and wife, Michelle; Kevin and wife, Donna;
Karen and her husband, Terry; grandchildren, Abbey Joy, Sam, Garrett,
Tanner, Derrick and Dillon; many nieces and nephews and
other relatives, as well as numerous wonderful friends and acquaintances.
We will all miss her deeply, but gather strength in knowing
that she is again walking and visiting with those that preceded her.
Her family extends thanks to the Hospice staff that made her final
days so wonderful.
Visitation will be held Thursday, August 5, 2010 at Callahan-Edfast
from 3 - 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held Friday, August
6, 2010 at the Lutheran Church of Messiah at 2:00 p.m. with
burial to follow in Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The ALS
Association, Rocky Mountain Chapter, 7403 Church Ranch Blvd.,
Suite 109, Westminster, CO 80021, Hospice & Palliative Care of
Western CO, 3090B N. 12th St., Grand Junction, CO 81506 or The
Desert Vista Garden Club, c/o Ruth Young, 872 Montclair Drive,
Palisade, CO 81526.
