UNCLE JOHN LOVE ANSWERS LAST CALL. Death Claims Old Pioneer and Stockman at age of 90 Wednesday Morning--Funeral Will Be Held Today.
Death claimed one of Eagle county's oldest citizens, earliest pioneers and empire builders, when the angel quietly entered the home and took the soul of John W. LOVE in Eagle last Wednesday morning. Mr. LOVE had been confined to his home for many months and the past few weeks death seemed imminent daily, but the staunch old pioneer would rally bravely from each attack and seemingly gain new strength.
John W. LOVE was born in Canton, Fulton county, Ill., April 3, 1837, a son of Samuel and Hanna (Collins) LOVE, natives both of Ohio. He had two uncles who served in the war of 1812, John COLLINS and William LOVE. His father was a farmer practically all his life and lived to the ripe old age of 86 years.
"Uncle John," as he was familiarly known, came to Colorado during the gold excitement in 1860, and first settled in Colorado City, but soon afterward went to Breckinridge, Summit county, and became interested in mining. He also had interest in Park county, where he early engaged in the livestock industry of the state. In 1882 he became attracted by the possibilities of the Eagle river valley as a livestock and ranching country, and that year settled in this county. That fall he brought into this valley one of the first herds of cattle brought into the Brush creek valley, then a wild mountain valley without settlement or neighbors. He took up a homestead on Brush creek about four miles south of Eagle. His herd was trailed from Park county over the head of Turkey creek by Webster FROST, who has since passed on, and Geo. S. WILKINSON, both young men filled with love of adventure, who remained here and, with Mr. LOVE, became substantial citizens of the county. Since that time he has made his home at the ranch which he first settled and in later years the town of Eagle.
In 1864, Uncle John married Mrs. Ellen (Frost) EATON, living a happy married life for 34 years. Later he mas married to Mrs. Angie NEWCOMER. There were no children of either union.
Mr. LOVE lived an active life, was a real pioneer, doing much for the development of the livestock, mining and agricultural industries of his adopted state. In his more vigorous years he was active in politics, being a life-long Democrat. He served Eagle county as commissioner for many years, having been chairman of the board several years of his service.
The last years of his life were spent in retirement in Eagle, living in the home of his beloved niece, Mrs. A. B. WHALEY, at whose home he passed to a well-deserved rest early in the morning of September 6, 1927, at the age of 90 years. During the months of his suffering he was lovingly cared for by Mrs. WHALEY, who did everything possible to make his suffering bearable.
Since 1867 he has been an honored member of the Masonic order, and his burial will be in charge of Castle Lodge, A. F. & A. M. of Eagle. The funeral services will be held today, Friday, September 9, from the local M. E. church, and the body will be laid to rest in the Eagle cemetery.
