FUNERAL OF CASPER SCHUMM HELD IN GYPSUM MONDAY.
Funeral services for Casper SCHUMM who passed away at his home in Glenwood Springs Saturday, following a three-weeks' illness, were conducted at the Methodist church in Gypsum at 2 p.m. Monday, April 7. Rev. C. R. STOCKINGER, of the local church, and Rev. Bert BESSIRE, Methodist minister of Glenwood Springs conducted the service assisted by a local choir, Mrs. Frank DOLL, Mrs. Kenneth GERARD and Mr. W. H. LEA.
Many old-time friends congregated in Gypsum to pay their last respects to the memory of "Gyp" SCHUMM, who was one of the early day pioneers of Gypsum valley, and still retains an active interest in the community since his removal to Glenwood three years ago at which time, because of failing health, he turned over the management of his extensive cattle interests to his son William. Mr. SCHUMM was also for many years one of the active and aggressive businessmen of the community, for he established and for many years was sole owner of Gypsum's first electric light plant. He still owns a home in Gypsum.
Casper SCHUMM was born in Dwight, Ill., October 5, 1856 and came to Leadville, Colo., in 1879. He stayed in and around Leadville for some time and then went to Cattle creek in Garfield county where he spent the winter. The following year he went to Eagle county and in 1881 he homesteaded a ranch on the Eagle river, between what is now the towns of Eagle and Gypsum. In 1888 he married Mary ZABEL, and to the union were born two sons, William Casper and Walter Edward. In 1895 his wife passed on, and in 1896 he married Susie BRESSNER, and to this couple were born four daughters. In 1904 he moved to Gypsum, where he lived until three years ago, when he moved to Glenwood Springs. He passed away at his home there April 4, 1930, being 73 years, 3 months and 29 days of age. Left to mourn his loss are his wife, one son, William Casper, of Gypsum; three daughters, Mrs. Oscar H. ANDERSON and Mrs. D. L DODO, Gypsum; Miss Etta SCHUMM of Glenwood Springs; two grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Fred SIEFFERT and Miss Kate SCHUMM of Utica, Ill.
Interment was in the Cedar Hill cemetery at Gypsum, Mortician W. H. FARNUM of Glenwood being in full charge of all funeral arrangements.
Among those from Glenwood attending the funeral of Mr. SCHUMM in Gypsum were Mr. and Mrs. J. F. McCOY, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hill, Judge and Mrs. C. L. NOONAN, and Lee WILSON.
