Dorothy L. Baughman died at
her home on June 7, 2010.
Dorothy was sixth of the ten
c h i l d r e n o f I r v i n a n d E u l a
Baughman. She was born on
April 3, 1926 in Grand Junction
and spent most of her life in
Grand Junction. She also lived in
San Diego County, California for
about a dozen years.
Dorothy graduated from Grand
Junction High School in 1944 as
co-valedictorian and received her
undergraduate degree in education
at Colorado University and a
master’s degree in librarianship
from Denver University. She was
always proud of her education.
She taught in Western Colorado
secondary schools for many years
in the areas of math, physics,
chemistry and geology. She
worked at the National Research
Laboratory in Los Alamos, NM and Livermore, CA during the
1950’s. Before her retirement in 1993, she worked as a medical transcriptionist.
Dorothy was a past Matron of Eastern Star Sunshine
Chapter #53 and long time member of PEO.
Although she never married or had children of her own, Dorothy
considered her 23 nieces and nephews to be her “own special kids”.
Dorothy was very fond of her family and enjoyed being the family
historian. She was one of few family members that had attended all
of the family reunions that started in 1949. She also enjoyed the outdoors,
camping, nature study, bird watching, reading (especially
politics and religion), gardening, cooking, sewing, and listening to
classical music. In her younger years she played the violin, performing
at weddings and other special occasions. She was a current
member of Monument View Bible Church and enjoyed Bible study.
Dorothy especially enjoyed spending time at the family cabin on
Grand Mesa, and was always willing to take a family member or
friend along to share those special times. She loved to travel and
spent many happy times with her sisters, cousins or friends exploring
new areas of the country. Dorothy was a lifelong Republican and
closely followed current political events.
Dorothy was predeceased by seven of her siblings, Lois Baughman,
Bob Baughman, Ted Baughman, Mildred Wilkenson, Wayne
Baughman, Richard Baughman, and Shirley Jones. She is survived
by her sisters, Ruth Baughman of Denver and Beth Darnell of Idaho
Falls, Idaho, seven cousins, 23 nieces and nephews and many
friends. Aunt Dorothy will surely be missed by family and friends -
but never forgotten.
The Baughman family would like to thank the doctors and nurses
at St. Mary’s Hospital, Dr. Mary Clark, Visiting Angels and the
nurses and staff at Alpine Hospice for the special care given to Dorothy
the past few months. Also special thanks to all her friends at
Independence Village.
Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 3, 2010 at the Masonic
section of the Grand Junction Municipal Cemetery followed by a
gathering of family and friends at Monument View Bible Church,
1173 17 1/2 Road in Fruita. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers
can be sent to Alpine Home Health and Hospice, 602 Jackson
St., Clifton, CO 81520 or to the Botanical Gardens of Western Colorado.
