Fern Cook, of Grand Junction,
passed away Wednesday, July 14,
2010, at the Hospice & Palliative
Care Center in Grand Junction, at
the age of 94.
Fern Beryl Pearson was born
August 16, 1915 in Lancaster, PA
to Solomon V. Pearson and
Berniece Craig Weir. She had
been a resident of Grand Junction
since 1920. She attended school
here and graduated from Grand
Junction High School in 1933.
Fern married Francis Hugh Cook,
Sr. on June 3, 1933.
During World War II she and
her husband worked at the Mare
Island Navy Yard in Vallejo, CA.
Upon returning to Grand Junction
in 1947 she worked at The
Daily Sentinel for ten years. She
later worked as the secretary to
the County Superintendent of
Schools for ten years. Before retirement she had owned and operated
Cooks Real Estate Agency for 17 years.
During the 1950’s Fern had been active in community affairs. She
had served as Vice Chairman of the Mesa County Democratic Party.
She had also served as President of the Jane Jefferson Club. One
year she was appointed by the governor to serve as one of the state
delegates to The White House Conference on Children and Youth.
Fern was a member of the Women of the Moose Chapter 1073 and
Eastern Star #53. During her retirement years she had been involved
in the forming of The Golden Age Group and had served as
its first president.
Her mother, father and sister, Audrey Carvallo preceded her in
death and her husband passed away February 9, 1983. Survivors include
her son, Hugh Cook (wife Donna) of Grand Junction; daughter,
Kay Jean Wright of Grand Junction; five grandchildren, David
Cook and William Wright (wife, Marlene) of Fruita; Kellie Cook
and Kathy (wife of Dan Cahill) of Arizona, and Karen Sabra of
Grand Junction; five great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
Her sister, Marjorie McConaha also survives her.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday,
July 19th, at the Orchard Mesa Masonic Cemetery. Arrangements
are under the direction of Callahan-Edfast Mortuary of Grand
Junction.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice
& Palliative Care of Western Colorado, 3090 B. North 12th Street,
Grand Junction, Colorado 81506.
