George A. McRory, 87, of Cape Coral, Fla., formerly of the Vail Valley, died May 12, 2010.

He was born in Paisley, Scotland, on Jan 5, 1923, and arrived on Ellis Island at the age of 4 with his mother and four older siblings. He grew up in Connecticut and joined the Army Air Force during World War II. While in the service, he flew bombing missions with the 7th Bombardment Group, 493rd squadron from 1943-1946 as a waist gunner on the B-24 Double Trouble in the China/Burma/India Theater.

Following his Army career, George married Gloria Hughes and went into the plumbing business with his extended family. He and Gloria raised four sons, Colin, Clayton, Cletus and Courtney, in West Hartford, Conn. The family relocated to Vail one by one, with son Clayton leading the way in 1978. George was involved early on in Beaver Creek's development and then worked with his wife and son Clayton to open Avon Quick Print. He was a fixture in Avon and always had an amusing tale to tell.

He moved to Walsenburg following Gloria's death in 1999 and then on to the warmth of Cape Coral, Fla., in 2009. George loved to ski and participated in the town of Avon ski races for many years. He is preceded in death by his wife, Gloria, and sons Courtney and Cletus. Sadly, his remaining sons, Colin and Clayton, have both passed away in the last month. George is survived by his two grandson's Clayton, 26, and Jack, 23, who grew up down the street from their “Poppa” and currently reside in California.

Services will be at 3 p.m. June 11 at Sunset View Cemetery in Eagle.
