Kayaker who died on Eagle River identified

EAGLE — Eagle County Coroner Kara Bettis has confirmed the identity of the kayaker who died on the Eagle River on Saturday as 31-year-old John Novak, of Minturn. Novak was on a private river trip on the Eagle River with two friends, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office. He was wearing a life preserver and helmet, the release said.

The cause of death will not be known until an autopsy is completed later this week.

Assisting agencies included the Eagle County Sheriff's Office, Vail Mountain Rescue, Greater Eagle Fire Protection District, Gypsum Fire Protection District and the Western Eagle County Ambulance District.

John P. Novak, 31, of Red Cliff, died Saturday.

John was born to Thomas and Cynthia Novak on Nov. 10, 1979, in Wausau, Wis. John grew up with his parents in Roberts, Wis., and attended River Falls High School, graduating in 1998.

John worked as a carpenter in Vail, where he lived for the past 10 years. John enjoyed many outdoor activities in the mountains of Colorado. John's spirit will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his parents, Thomas and Cynthia Novak, of Roberts; sister, Sarah Benedict and her family, of New Richmond, Wis.; brother, Jacob Novak of Vail; and many aunts, uncles, grandparents, extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be at St. Patrick's Church in Hudson, Wis., at 11 a.m. Friday.

A celebration of life to be held in Red Cliff will be announced later.

John's funeral service will be entrusted to the O'Connell Family Funeral Home, 520 S. 11th St, Hudson, WI, 715-386-3725, www.oconnellfuneralhomes.com.

Remembering Johnny Blaze
John “Blaze” Novak never feared a day in his life. He lived every day like it was his last and his passion for living was contagious. Everyone who knew Johnny could not help but get excited for whatever adventure they were to have when spending time together. Whether he was rock climbing, snowboarding, playing the drums, playing paintball, or even if he was doing something for the first time, he always had a smile on his face.
