Mabel Leighton died Sunday,
September 12th, at the Hospice
Care Center at the age of 96. Mabel
was born to George Heckelbech
and Theresa Caroline (Carrie)
Brewer Heckelbech on a
homestead near Van Tassell,
Wyoming on December 15th,
1913. She lived there during her childhood, with her parents and her
two sisters, Mary and Rosy,
She left home to become the wife of Carl Victor Haase on February
17th, 1937 in Harrison, Nebraska. They moved around a lot
during the first years of their marriage as it was the depression and
jobs were very hard to find and did not last long. After moving to
Casper, Wyoming they had their first child Carl Leroy in 1937.
Again jobs were difficult to find and their search for a job took them
to Lead, S.D., where their second child was born, Mary Evelyn, in
1939. Their next move was to New Castle, Wyoming, where her
daughter Margie was born in 1940 and a son Donald was born in
February 1942.
Next she lived in Alliance, Nebraska where her fifth and final
child, Gary, was born in December, 1943. As her husband Carl was
going to be drafted for the war effort, so they moved to Harrison to
be near family, however the war was ending and he was not drafted.
The family later moved to Cedaredge, CO in 1946 where they continued
to live until her husband Carl was killed in a jeep accident on
Grand Mesa in 1961. She worked for Spruce Lodge on Grand Mesa
and then in Grand Junction where she worked for Hesteds and then
at Climax, Colorado she married Harold Leighton in 1965, and they
moved to the Redmond, OR area where they lived until after
Harold's death in 1991.
A year later she moved back to Fruita to be near her children,
where she lived until January of this year at which time she moved
in with Don and Carol in their home in Grand Junction where she
stayed until her death. Mabel very much enjoyed her family, her
church and friends in and around Fruita. She also loved to play cards
and fish which she did until the very last few years with her family.
Preceding her in death were her first husband, Carl Haase in 1961;
her second husband, Harold Leighton in 1991; her daughter, Mary
who passed away in 1996, and her grandson, Tracy Boyd also preceded
her in death on December 27th, 2007.
Survivors are Carl (Marlene) Haase, and Margie (Gilbert Boyd) of
Mesa, Arizona; Don (Carol) Haase of Grand Junction, and Gary
(Gwen) of Gresham, Oregon, along with nine grandchildren; 14
great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
