Catharn Gillaspie, 96, Grand Junction, died Jan. 2, 2011, at Hospice Care Center.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Fruita. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will follow at New Elmwood Cemetery.

Survivors include one son, Philip of Fruita; two daughters, Nadyne Isley of Fruita and Edith Jones of Austin; one sister, Jessie Baumgaertel of West Valley City, Utah; seven grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren.

Catharn Gillaspie April 3, 1914 – January 2, 2011 Catharn died Sunday, January 2, 2011 at the Hospice Care Center. She was 96 years old. Catharn was born April 3, 1914 in Jensen, Utah. She was the daughter of Jasper Otis and Arvilla Julina Butcher. The family lived in Jensen until she was seven years old, they then moved to Naples, Utah where she lived until she married Phillip Earl Gillaspie on December 23, 1933 in Vernal, Utah. Earl died February 21, 1981. Catharn and Earl lived west of Rangley, CO on a ranch for seven years. They moved to Loma, CO in 1940. Catharn was the mother of three children, Nadyne, Edith and Philip. She lived in Loma until moving to her daughter's home in Fruita in February, 2007. Catharn was baptized as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the age of twelve. Catharn was active in the Relief Society until her eye sight failed her. She loved the Lord, life and people. She had many hobbies. She always shared the extra vegetables, fruit and flowers that she grew with neighbors and friends. She crocheted and quilted afghans and quilts for family and gifts. She made over one hundred lap robes and pillows for nursing homes in the area. Her most memorable vacation was a trip that she took later in life with her brothers, James and Lile and their wives. She is preceded in death by her brothers, Otis, Perry, James, Lile and Sandford and one sister, Rose. Catharn is survived by one sister, Jessie Baumgaertel in Utah; sisters-in-law, Rhoda Butcher, Ruth Butcher and Mildred Butcher; daughters, Nadyne and Edith and son, Philip. She is also survived by six grandchildren, and numerous great and great great grandchildren. Viewing will be held at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 343 E. Ottley Ave. in Fruita on Saturday, January 8, 2011 from 9 - 10:00 a.m. Services will start at 10:00 a.m., burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, 1175 - 17 1/4 Road in Fruita.
