Billy Max Baker

1956 - 2007

Billy Max Baker, age 50, died on Feb. 8. He went to catch the big one that got away.

Bill was born Oct. 23, 1956, in Wichita, Kan., to Billy and Barbara Baker. He attended Wichita Southeast High School and graduated in 1974.

After high school, Bill moved to the mountains of Colorado to work and fulfill his passion for hunting and fishing. Bill met the love of his life, Melody Freeman, and married her on Sept. 30, 1989 in Redstone, Colo.

In 1995, Bill along with his longtime friend, Curt Bjork started his own masonry company, Double B Masonry. His craftsmanship of brick and stone can be seen in many homes and buildings throughout the Western Colorado region, including the Eagle Valley.

In 1991, Bill and Melody were blessed with the greatest joy of their lives, daughter, Staci. Bill was a loving and devoted father who shared his passion for life everyday with his two favorite girls.

Bill was an avid sportsman who enjoyed fishing, archery hunting, baseball, volleyball and hiking. He loved watching daughter Staci excel at soccer and 4-H.

A gentle, thoughtful and caring soul, Bill loved to garden and cook. He would spend hours at Christmas making homemade bread, jams, salsas, taffy and peanut butter balls for friends and loved ones.

In his short life he touched many through his sense of humor, helping hands, and love of life. He is gone from our presence but will live forever in our hearts.

Bill was preceded in death by his father, Billy Baker and niece, Tiffany Vaughan.

He is survived by wife Melody and daughter, Staci, both of New Castle; mother Barbara Baker; brother Jim and Debbie Baker; sister Cheryl and Vic Vaughan all of Wichita, Kan.; sister Kasey Baker of Andover, Kan.; and many nephews, nieces and loving friends.

A memorial service was held Feb. 13 at Farnum Holt Funeral Home in Glenwood Springs. In lieu of flowers, an educational fund is set up for Bill’s daughter, Staci. Contributions may be made at any Alpine Bank.
