FORMER SKI INSTRUCTOR BAKER DIES DEC. 20. Part-time Vail resident Marillyn H. "Mime" BAKER died Dec. 20 following a three-month battle with cancer. Marillyn was born in Minneapolis, Minn., but spent most o her life in the St. Paul and White Bear Lake areas.
Marillyn attended Central High School in St. Paul, but due to her father's military service in World War II, she graduated from East High School in Denver. She attended Mills College in Oakland, Calif., in 1943 for one year, followed by a year at the university of Minnesota.
She then married, returning to St. Paul two years later.
Marillyn spent the last 17 years of her life in Vail, where she became an instructor with the Vail Ski School. She loved to ski but also loved music, gourmet cooking and keeping in touch with people. To some she was known as "the card lady" because she remembered so many birthdays, anniversaries and other events.
She enjoyed life to the fullest with her family and many friends. She delighted in being with her children and grandchildren, especially in the outdoors.
When she became ill, she spent a lot of time reminiscing and reviewing her life, and she concluded that it had been a wonderful life. Those who knew her would have to agree.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, retired orthodontist Robert BAKER of Vail and Scottsdale, Ariz.; a daughter, Dr. Lynn BAKER-PITOUN and her husband, Jean-Yves PITOUN of Los Angeles; Charles R. BAKER and his wife, Pamela SHEPHERD BAKER of Sacramento, Calif.; and Dr. James H. BAKER and his wife, Deborah SHELDON BAKER of Denver; and three grandchildren, Christopher and Cathy PITOUN and Nick BAKER.
The Marillyn H. BAKER Memorial Fund has been set up at WestStar Bank, 108 South Frontage Road in Vail, for those wishing to make such a gift. The family hopes to establish a "worthwhile" project in Vail with money from the fund.
