Mary Alice Baldrey: 1921 - 2005

Former longtime Gypsum resident, Mary Alice Baldrey of Montrose, died Monday evening, Oct. 10, 2005, at the Montrose Memorial Hospital at the age of 84.

Mary Alice Anderson Goldworthy, the daughter of Oscar and May (Humphrey) Anderson, was born on May 8, 1921, in Montrose, Colo. She spent her childhood in the Uncompahgre area and graduated from the Montrose County High School with the class of 1939.

Mary Alice married Elbert Baldrey on Dec. 29, 1946, at the First Presbyterian Church in Montrose. They had the joy and privilege of sharing nearly 59 years together.

In December of 1960, the Baldrey family moved from Montrose to Gypsum, Colo., where they made their home for approximately 44 years. They returned to Montrose in September of 2004 to be closer to family, where they remained until the time of her death.

Mary Alice Baldrey was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Gypsum and the First Presbyterian Church in Montrose. She also belonged to the United Methodist Women’s Association. Her main focus was her gardening and flowers. Baldrey loved spending time with her family and loved her animals. Cherished memories of Baldrey remind us of how much it meant to have her here and how much her presence enriched the lives of others. She will be deeply missed.

Surviving family members who were blessed to share Baldrey’s life include her beloved husband, Elbert Baldrey, a resident of Valley Manor Care Center in Montrose; and her children, Margaret and husband Terry Stephens of San Antonio, Texas; Ralph Baldrey of Eagle, Colo.; Carol and husband Bruce Harper of Avon, Colo.; Kenneth Baldrey and Kris Peterson of Denver, Colo.; and Alice and husband Blaine Kelley of Montrose, Colo. Baldrey is also survived by nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two sisters, Elma Ross of Montrose and Ruth Smith of Hotchkiss, Colo.

Baldrey was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Theodore Anderson and David Goldworthy; and two sisters, Anita Townsend and Lorraine Winters; and daughter-in-law, Vera Baldrey.

A funeral service in celebration of Baldrey’s life will be officiated by Rev. Frank Vanlandingham at 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14, at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose. Interment will follow the service in the Cedar Cemetery at Montrose.
