BALKIN: DENVER SURGEON, PART-TIME VAIL RESIDENT.
Denver surgeon, World War II veteran and part-time Vail resident Dr. Gilbert BALKIN died in Denver May 20.
BALKIN was born Sept. 25 in Memphis, Tenn., but grew up in Drew, Miss. After college in New Orleans and service in WW II, BALKIN moved to Denver, where he lived until his death.
BALKIN served in the U.S. Air Force during WW II and was active in the reserves for 30 years. He retired as a full colonel.
He married Jeanne ELBE in 1943.
BALKIN had a practice in Denver and worked at nearly all the Denver-area hospitals. He was also an instructor of surgery at the CU Health Sciences Center. He retired last October.
BALKIN loved the mountains. He was a part-time Vail resident from 1968 and was an avid skier and racquetball player. He also liked to travel and to collect things.
A memorial was held May 22. BALKIN is survived by his wife, Jeanne, daughter Diane (William Wise) BALKIN, and son Bruce Edward BALKIN.
