BRUCE BECK KILLED IN KOREA.
The Korean War crept closer to Eagle county this week when a Defense Department telegram announced the death of Bruce BECK, 23 year old Red Cliff man, on the Korean battlefield Sept. 23.
The Red Cliff man entered the army last December, and went overseas last May, serving with the Second Infantry Division.
Born in Red Cliff June 8, 1918, Bruce spent his entire life in the community, graduating from Red Cliff Union High School in 1946. His service to his country was another star in the impressive service record of the BECK family--five boys in the service--with the sixth and the youngest planning to enlist in the Air Force next week.
Theodore, an Army man, was in the Philippines and with the Army of Occupation in Japan. Buster, three and a half years in the Army, went through the battle of the Bulge--then re-enlisted and was sent to Hawaii.
Jack served in the Navy during peace time while Quinn was in the Navy during World War II and now serves with the Air Force, at present at Washington University. The youngest of the BECK brothers, Russell who graduated from high school last spring, will leave next week for Denver, trying for the Air Force.
Parents of the boys, respected citizens of Eagle county for many years, are dead. The father, Earl BECK, died in 1939. Dessie BECK died in 1947. An uncle, Floyd BECK resides at Minturn.
The upper end of Eagle county has had its share of tragedy in this war--with the only two war deaths coming from Red Cliff--Bruce BECK and Sammy RODRIGUEZ. Felis Montoya, son of Mrs. V. MONTOYA of Minturn has been missing since October, 1950.
