Darrell G. BARNES, a native of Eagle County, died September 24 at Presbyterian Medical Center in Denver. He was a victim of lymphatic leukemia.
Born in a log cabin five miles north of Eagle on December 19, 1922, Mr. BARNES attended elementary and high school in Eagle.
He was a graduate of Mesa College where he studied Business administration.
Mr. BARNES was employed in the accounting department of the New Jersey Zinc Company in Gilman immediately after his graduation from college.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943. He served as a radioman for 32 months and received an honorable discharge in May, 1946.
He returned to the New Jersey Zinc Co. at Gilman and progressed to Chief accountant at the Gilman office and assisted in the accounting departments of other New Jersey Zinc offices in Pennsylvania and Tennessee. After 36 years of service, failing health required Mr. BARNES to take a medical leave.
Mr. BARNES was an active member of the American Legion.
He is survived by two daughters, Linda KLAHR of Gilman and Rita FOWLER of Eagle; two sons, Larry BARNES of Gilman and Rick BARNES of Eagle-Vail, and by a grandson, Nicholas KLAHR. Other survivors include his sister, Phyllis JOHNSON and brother-in-law, Jack JOHNSON, Eagle; two nephews, Michael JOHNSON of Denver and Scott JOHNSON of Eagle and a niece, Alexis STRANGE of Grand Junction. Also surviving are two grandnephews, one grandniece, aunts, uncles, cousins and his former wife, Marvel BARNES of Eagle-Vail.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Steven GOODIER at the Eagle Methodist Church, and burial was in Sunset View Cemetery in Eagle.
Pallbearers were Ira BINDLEY, Allen EATON, Dan RULE, Jim SEABRY, Mike WALCK and Robert RIGGLE.
Farnum-Richardson Mortuary of Glenwood Springs was in charge of burial.
