Grand Junction Daily Sentinel page Obituary - October 3, 2010

Charles Larry Piffer peacefully
passed away on Monday, September
27, 2010, in his Grand
Junction home with his family at
his side.
Born October 28, 1940, in
Glenwood Springs, Larry was the
first born of Charles Paul Piffer
and Laura Elizabeth Gardner,
sister Jean soon followed. His father
passed away when Larry was six years old and his mother married
Jay “Jack” Bair. Larry welcomed two additional sisters and four
brothers to the family.
He worked as a young boy herding sheep and tending camps in the
high country around Marble in the summers; winters were spent in
Ordway, Colorado, and later out to the Utah desert. The family later
lived in Marble full time where Larry and his sister, Jean rode a
horse down to school from their cabin in Marble. As a teenager he
spent summers farming in Gypsum Creek and El Jebel with his
grandfather, Lawrence Gardner. He loved spending time fishing and
hunting with his uncles, Harry and Chuck Gardner.
Larry married his high school sweetheart, Konea Raye Pratt on
March 31, 1960, in Manti, Utah. Together, they welcomed the arrival
of six children and 19 grandchildren. Larry and Konea celebrated
their 50th wedding anniversary earlier this year.
Larry was a master carpenter, known for his solid and meticulous
craftsmanship. His homes and buildings dot the Roaring Fork Valley
from Aspen to Marble. Larry could always be counted on to help
others in need. He spent countless hours in service to his church.
His great loves were his children, grandchildren, family and
friends. He loved heading to the mountains with the children for
fishing, camping, and hunting. Cooking BBQ’s and pancake breakfasts
for friends and church outings always put a smile on his face.
Larry is preceded in death by his father, Charles Paul Piffer; son,
Andrew Lawrence Piffer; brothers, Grant and Wade Bair, and
step-father, Jack Bair.
He leaves behind his wife, Konea, and five children, Lorna
(Michael) Riley, Glenwood Springs; Polly Sudds, Provo, UT; David
(Sloan) Piffer, Glenwood Springs; Julie (John) Poole, Green River,
WY, and Malinda (Nathan) Wheatley, Huntersville, NC. He will be
especially missed by his grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, and
Madison Riley; Krissy Sudds; Lindsay, Megan and Caroline Piffer;
Kuniko, Kiana, Colter, Caden, Collin, and Kassidy Poole; Ashley,
Brittany, Emily, Zachary, Jacob, and Catherine Wheatley. He is also
survived by his mother, Laura Bair, Carbondale; sisters, Jean
Schauster, Carbondale; JaNaye Williams, Silt, and Janice Moore,
Florence, SC, and brothers, Wendell Bair, Carbondale; Woody Bair,
Evanston, WY, and countless nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Friday, October 8, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. at The
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 409 29th Street, Glenwood
Springs, CO. The family viewing will be held at 9:00 a.m.
Bishop Darrell Warren will officiate. Burial will follow at Rosebud
Cemetery in Glenwood Springs.
Flowers may be sent to Farnum-Holt Funeral Home at 405 West
7th Street, Glenwood Springs, CO.
