Lugardita “Lugy” Stocker, age
89, of Grand Junction formerly of
Helper, Utah passed away Thursday,
June 3, 2010 at her home.
She died peacefully after a long
term illness while surrounded by
her loving family.
"Lugy", as she was known, was
born in El Rito, New Mexico on
May 23, 1921 to Luciano S.
Montoya and Auralia Martinez
and was raised by a single mother
from age nine. Her education
ended at third grade when she
went to work on the farm. She
learned at a very young age to
work hard and be strong for all
her family while continuing self
education and self support.
She married Sigiefredo Trujillo
in Monero, New Mexico, and
later divorced. Of this union were
born seven children. As a single mother, she worked as a housekeeper
for many prominent families around Helper while keeping
her home immaculate. She was the best New Mexican cook around,
especially her Chile Verde with pork, and home rolled Tortillas. No
one ever left her house hungry. "The Biscochita Queen", was always
helping with weddings, funerals, reunions and Christmas. Everyone
looked forward to her coffee cans filled with cookies and
birthdays were made special when she called to sing to us.
In 1976, she met Frederick G. Stocker and on October 15, of the
same year they married and began a new life together in Grand
Junction. With heavy hearts, and great joy we put her in his loving
care. They loved and took care of each other until his passing in
September of 2002.
Mom's greatest love was spending time with her children and especially
being "Grandma" to all the little ones. Her faith and devotion
to God never wavered. She always said, "It doesn't matter what religion
you choose, as long as you believe in God."
Her past times included crocheting afgans and making blankets for
her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed reading the Bible,
cooking, cleaning her house, and visiting with family on the phone.
She loved the T.V. game shows, D.W.T.S., American Idol, Golf
(Tiger), baseball (Braves and Rockies), and her country music and
Elvis spirituals.
She is survived by her five daughters, Nancy (Erlindo) Montoya,
Salt Lake City; Alice O. Flores, Grand Junction, CO; Abby Martinez,
Salt Lake City; Ida (Le Roy) Gutierrez, Helper; Gladys (Mike)
McKendrick, Tooele; son, Joe R. Trujillo, Las Vegas, NV;
daughter-in-law, Pruda Trujillo, Farmington, NM; 29 grandchildren,
36 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; son, Lou
Trujillo; brother, Benino; sister, Maria Daimanti, daughter-in-law,
Darlene Trujillo, and two great grandchildren.
Special thanks to St. Mary's Hospital, Hospice Care of Grand
Junction, Palliative Care of Western Colorado and Doctors Tolby
and Terry.
Funeral service will be Saturday, June 12, 2010, 11:00 a.m., at
Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mitchell's Friday evening
from 6 - 8:00 p.m. and Saturday one hour prior to service. Interment,
