James Arnold Vavra, of Toms River, N.J., passed away July 23 after the latest in a series of illnesses.

Born in Dallas on Jan. 12, 1921, he was one of seven children. He served as a boatswain's mate on the battleship USS Idaho during World War II. He met his late wife, Ensign Marie Campbell, while convalescing from a war injury, and together they raised eight children. He had a long career working for JCP&L and retired as a general line foreman in 1981 after 33 years.

He is survived by four daughters, Marylou O'Hara, Peggy Prohammer, Theresa Vanover and Judy Benson; four sons, Martin, Peter, a local pianist, Jimmy and John; and three brothers who still reside in Texas, Harold, Alfred and Richard. He was Pop Pop to 14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He is deeply missed by all.

Visiting will be held Wednesday from 4-8 pm at the Quinn Hopping Funeral Home, 26 Mule Road, Toms River. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Lakewood. Contributions in her memory may be made to Van Dyke Hospice, c/o Community Medical Center, 99 Route 37 West, Toms River, NJ 08755.
