James Arnold Vavra, of Toms River, N.J., passed away July 23 after the latest in a series of illnesses.
Born in Dallas on Jan. 12, 1921, he was one of seven children. He served as a boatswain's mate on the battleship USS Idaho during World War II. He met his late wife, Ensign Marie Campbell, while convalescing from a war injury, and together they raised eight children. He had a long career working for JCP&L and retired as a general line foreman in 1981 after 33 years.
He is survived by four daughters, Marylou O'Hara, Peggy Prohammer, Theresa Vanover and Judy Benson; four sons, Martin, Peter, a local pianist, Jimmy and John; and three brothers who still reside in Texas, Harold, Alfred and Richard. He was Pop Pop to 14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He is deeply missed by all.
Visiting will be held Wednesday from 4-8 pm at the Quinn Hopping Funeral Home, 26 Mule Road, Toms River. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
