William Baxter
1928-2007
William “Bill†Allen Baxter died peacefully on July 30 in Rifle. He was 78.
Baxter was born in Denver on Nov. 9, 1928. He married Elaine M. Rauchfuss on March 26, 1949 in Englewood.
Bill and Elaine made many long road trips from Denver up the Colorado River Road in Eagle County where the family would vacation in a one room cabin on “Pose Creek.†Bill and Elaine later moved up the Colorado River Road where they raised their children, Marilyn, Patty and Billy.
They owned a home up the Colorado River Road on a small acreage and Bill had his own plastering and stucco business, Eagle Valley Plastering, for many years. After 40 years he retired and took up a hobby creating silver and rock jewelry.
He was a true “rock hound.†He enjoyed spending time in his shop working with rocks, antlers, silver, and anything he could find to make unique jewelry.
Bill and Elaine moved to Grand Junction in 1999 for a few years, before returning to Gypsum in 2002 where Bill helped his son and daughter-in-law build a home in Gypsum.
Bill enjoyed spending time with his family, time in the shop, a good cup of coffee, and talking about his creations. He had a wonderful sense of humor, especially in the past five years, as he battled illness. He smiled through most of it and was continually playing jokes on family and caregivers alike.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father, brother and a brother-in-law.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine; daughter and son-in-law Marilyn Coffman and Dennis Coffman; daughter Patty Baxter; son and daughter-in-law Bill Baxter and Tammy Baxter; grandchildren Denise, Wendy, Loren, Jenni, Shawn, and Brian; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Aug. 4 at the Eagle Valley High School Auditorium.
