Many in the Valley knew him as
“Unc”. Allen died at his home on
September 19, 2010 of natural
causes at the age of 91. He lived
in the same house for 86 years.
Allen was a life time resident of
Molina, Colorado, born to Clarence
A. Nichols Sr. and Mary
Ellen “Ella” (Ogden) Nichols on February 17, 1919. He attended
Bull Creek School and graduated from Collbran Union High School
in 1937.
Allen worked along with his family ranching until he joined the
Army Air Corps during WWII serving in Casa Blanca, Africa, returning
to the family ranch after being discharged.
Allen was involved in building the first ski runs at the Mesa Creek
Ski Area, known as Old Powderhorn. He helped build numerous
reservoirs in the area, including The Big Beaver, Cottonwood and
Bull Creek among many others. He built some of the first roads on
the Redlands and leveled numerous farm grounds in the lower valley
until the early ‘60’s. Allen took pride in his work while he ran
the heavy equipment and loved working on something mechanical.
In later years, one of his greatest past times was watching the Colorado
Rockies and he was able to see them play this spring in Arizona.
Allen married Frances R. Lewis on September 30, 1976 in Collbran
and together they ran the family ranch. They received the Plateau
Valley Cattlemen of the Year Award in 2004.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife; his parents; sister,
Mary; brothers, Nate and Dick Nichols and nephew, Charles
Nichols.
Allen is survived by his brother, Dr. Ben E. (Lois) Nichols Sr. of
Collbran, and stepson, Neil (Sheila) Hegglund of Nevada and their
children. He is also survived by 19 nieces and nephews, numerous
great and great-great nieces and nephews to whom he was very special,
many close friends and extended family.
Visitation will be Thursday, September 23rd from 6 - 8:00 p.m. at
Snell-McLean Funeral Home in Palisade, CO. Services will be held
Friday, September 24, 2010 at the Molina Baptist Church at 1:00
p.m. followed by services at the Mesa Cemetery. Friends and family
