Leva Lou Lowe
April 16, 1914 – June 20, 2010
Lou Lowe, age 96, passed away
on June 20, 2010, at Family
Health West Hospital. Lou was
born April 16, 1914, in Stratton,
Colorado. She was the daughter
of Samuel Edward and Alice Ann
Travis. Her childhood was spent
on the homestead in Stratton. Lou
graduated from Burlington High
School in 1933, then went to
beauty school in Denver, and
worked as a beautician there.
On May 18, 1940, Lou married
Byron Lowe in a ceremony at the
Little Brown Church of the
Wildwood in Iowa. Together they
lived in the Bear Creek and
Lakewood areas of Denver from
1940 until the year 2000. While
living in Bear Creek, Lou was
very active in The Twenty Club, a
group of close-knit members who
remained friends for years to
come. They then moved to Grand Junction to be near family.
Her husband's lifelong hobby was harness race horses, so Lou supported
his passion and traveled with him for 20 years from Colorado
to Illinois and other states for the training and racing seasons.
Having a sweet and very loving disposition, Lou was always there
for every family member, whether it involved horses, 4-H projects,
scouting, or school activities. Lou and Byron spent lots of special
time with their two granddaughters as they grew up, and they were
all very close.
Lou was an accomplished organist and played for the most part by
ear since her early childhood. She hauled her Hammond church organ
to horse shows all over Colorado, including the National Western
Stock Shows, to play for the horse presentations. Music always
provided joy for Lou throughout her entire life. She sang in the
Lakewood Methodist Church Choir for 20 years when she was
younger. Reading good books was another interest.
Survivors include two sons, Barry Lowe and his wife, Sue, and Jim
Lowe and his partner, Glenna Pletka, all of Grand Junction; two
granddaughters,Tara Lowe Harada and her husband, Hiraku Harada
of Tokyo, Japan, and Amanda Paige Lowe of Denver, Colorado, and
one young great granddaughter, Rina Victoria Harada, living with
her parents in Tokyo. Lou was preceded in death by her husband,
two brothers, and two sisters.
A visitation will be held at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary on Friday,
June 25, 2010, from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. followed by a graveside
service at Orchard Mesa Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers,
memorials can be made in Lou's name to Hospice and Palliative
