Ronald Lewis “Red” Hughes
died at home of a heart attack on
November 7. He was 75.
At his request no services will be
held. A memorial service may be
held at a later date. Cremation has
taken place.
Ronald Lewis “Red” Hughes
was born February 8, 1935 in Colorado Springs, CO. He spent his
early childhood in Divide Colorado before the family moved to
Paonia, CO. He attended Paonia schools through all 12 grades. He
graduated in 1953. He was an avid athlete in high school and was
proud of the fact that he was able to attend all games of his three
sons.
He enlisted in the US Marine Corps immediately after high school
graduation and served four years with basic training at Camp
Pendleton, CA and service in Occupied Japan.
He and Thelma Vodopich were married in 1957. They were later
divorced.
He worked at several jobs - including the coal mine in Somerset
and the gypsum mine in Moab, Utah and the Morrell Cattle ranch in
Paonia - before going into the cattle business for himself, first on the
family farm on Lamborn Mesa, then on Garvin Mesa , Terror Creek
and Midway. He was a ranching partner and ranch foreman with
Connie Oberholtzer at midway until her death in 2002. He continued
managing the Midway ranch until he retired in 2006.
He is survived by three sons, Brian (Josephine) Hughes of San
Jose, CA; Bill (Lorna) Hughes of Paonia, and Pat (Leslie) Hughes
Grand Junction; three grandsons, Keith (Amber) Hughes of Moab,
Utah; Scott (Audra) Hughes and Eric Hughes both of Grand Junction
and one great grandchild; two sisters, Evelyn Hickox of Colorado
Springs and Jean E. Tucker of Paonia and a nephew, James E.
Rupe of Grand Junction. Also surviving is his companion, Pat Gallob
of Paonia. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and
Edna Hughes and a sister, Betty Lois Hughes.
